BLOCKED ON THE INSIDE

H Gallery is very pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in Thailand of paintings by Rabin Satianpitayakul. Outsized and possessing endlessly compelling surfaces, Rabin’s works appear as fragments of the urban environment writ large. Here graffito, dense architectural details and encrusted surfaces are given monumental treatment, reflecting the physicality of the worn, overlooked and often grim details of a city’s infrastructure.

BLOCKED ON THE INSIDE is titled after a graffito statement from one of Rabin’s work and points to the seeming impenetrability of his paintings’ surfaces. Figure and ground coagulate on an unyielding terrain that confronts us with the fascinations of details and detritus.

Rabin’s works ‘return’ us to the visceral and physical potential of contemporary painting, challenging artificial boundaries between the conceptual and expressive and representational and abstracted. And, most sharply, they provide a contemporary take on monumentality: urban, chaotic and yet surprisingly intimate.

Rabin Satianpitayakul is based in Bangkok, where he is a full-time lecturer on the Multimedia Design program of Silpakorn University. Rabin graduated with a BA and MFA from RMIT University in Australia. He has taught at numerous art schools and has exhibited in Thailand and abroad.
