WHAT I DON'T KNOW THAT I KNOW

H Gallery is very pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Be Takerng Pattanopas, his second in Bangkok and further to a number of international exhibitions and commissions, including New York and Singapore.

What I Don't Know That I Know introduces a new departure for the artist in dialogue with his long-standing concern with fantastical sculptural metaphors for the interior of the human body. This departure is a series of dense paintings where figurative motifs hover amidst textured and translucent surfaces. Here a dynamic play between physicality and the qualities of mirage corresponds with Pattanopas's sculptures while the motifs highlight an evolving interest in found images. Subtly surreal and obliquely political, the paintings’ foggy, emergent, rhetoric suggests a darkly ambiguous engagement with popular visual culture.

The title of this exhibition claims uncertainty. What I Don't Know That I Know continues Pattanopas’s aim to unsettle our relationship to the human body in terms of perception, intangibility, and space and scale. Moving outwards from these explorations, the artist now approaches the world of signs and symbols to comparable affect. Both aspects of his current practice de-familiarize how we can understand ideas of self and the representations that provide order to such understandings, allowing for an expansive acknowledgement of imagination, myth, fantasy and cultural beliefs.
