TWIST

Jedsada Tangtrakulwong trained as a painter and now works with sculptural forms and site-specific practice. For Twist, the architectural details of H Project Space were studied over time with an aim of, in the artist’s words “an examination of the parts of a structure that renders that particular space different from others. Each space has its own character. I use the distinctive parts of a space as the starting point.”

Twist is a subtle installation prompted by the structural lattice feature of H Project Space, a natural air vent for the room. Tangtrakulwong considered its proximity to the ceiling and consequently noticed the typically unnoticed traces of spiders and their webs. Seeing a correspondence between these forms and the diagonal, diamond shapes of the lattice, the artist has created complex structures that are integrated with the architecture while seemingly trying to break free.

The cool architectural elegance of H Project Space is simultaneously announced and disrupted by Twist. Tangtrakulwong’s intervention allows for the contemplation of formal beauty while hinting at a melancholic sense of time passing and hidden histories of life and fragility.

Jedsada Tangtrakulwong is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute and holds a MFA (Distinction) from the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He is a lecturer in the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Mahasarakham University in the Northeast of Thailand and exhibits internationally. Tangtrakulwong recently completed a residency in the Yunnan, China and was awarded an Asia Pacific Artist Fellowship 2009 at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea.
